Accent Studies # 1

It is extremely important for every drummer to be able to place accents wherever they are required. These exercises should be practiced with a metronome at a slow speed in the beginning. (Gradually increase speed as technique improves).
  • Sticking should be "HAND to HAND". eg: RLRLRLRL
  • Hands should be closed on the sticks to allow wrist rotation.
  • ACCENTED NOTES (should be a full 90 degree stroke).
  • UNACCENTED NOTES (sticks should only lift 2 to 3 inches).
  • Unaccented notes should be very quiet.

You will notice that each exercise moves the accented notes closer together.
